Composite Decking

Composite decking is known more as a man-made building product. It includes an approximate equal mix of recycled wood fibers and recycled plastic. Because composite decking products are so durable, they normally have a much longer lifespan than wood decks.  They do not require the staining, sanding, sealing, and board replacement that you normally have to do at certain time with wood decks.

Adding a deck to your home however can add to the beauty of your property.  With composite decking, you are getting a deck that is beautiful for years which needs less maintenance. Composite decking can be a low maintenance solution to your outdoor sanctuary.

Types of Composite Decking

There are two types of composite decking, such as solid and hollow.

  • Solid looks more like wood and is noticeably heavier than the hollow version. Because of its greater mass, solid decking will expand and contract more with the temperature fluctuations. Solid composite decking is more preferred due to its strength and resemble real wood.
  • Hollow composite decking has a more man-made look. However, it won’t expand and contract as much as solid composite decking. It is also more susceptible to damage before it is installed.

Whilst timber has traditionally been used for decking, the emergence of composite timber has a host of advantages over traditional materials. This has led to it becoming the top choice for landscapers and architects looking for an attractive but long-lasting solution.

Being strong and durable, composite decking looks and feels just like natural wood. However, it provides a longer-lasting solution that is environmentally friendly, easy to install and requires minimal maintenance.

Some composite decking materials have hidden fasteners. These clip decking systems are more suitable if you intend to do-it-yourself.  Hollow decking products however will leave open ends that aren’t attractive and can collect dirt and leaves. Most hollow decking products sell end caps that can close the ends. Another method involves installing a racetrack or picture frame pattern perimeter to cover the open ends.
